DAY 4: MassQing is derrived from many indigenious traditions practiced all over the world. One of the most influential of these traditions is the Igbo Masquerade tradition in Nigeria. There, secret societies of initiates adorn themselves in elaborate outerwear and masks and become emissaries and/or hosts for the spirit world. Masquerades often appear to mourn the dead or celebrate a birth, or to bring an important message or lesson to the village. MassQs communicate on a more personal, individual level and yet they too have a spiritual element to them. They have allowed me to mourn and celebrate. And they are continually teaching me about myself and the world around me.
