DAY 20: "Do you still hang with drug dealers? Or have you changed? Does your face look young or does it show off your age?"
5th grade, for one of our in class assignments our teacher had us write a letter to ourselves in the future. I don't remember what I wrote, but I remember being fascinated with the idea of commun-icating with my future self. I don't remember what I ended up writing, and I don't remember ever
receiving the letter, (although it may still be on its way) so I decided not to wait and wrote another one, switching it up and upping the ante. I instead wrote to myself in the past, and then wrote to my future. The result is above. The letter is on one level an internal dialogue across time, but it also operates on a broader level as a culture's letter to itself, and when I say culture, I mean hip hop. It's been over 30 years since it's inception, and it's grown, developed (and underdeveloped) just as I have, sometimes in sync and sometimes at odds, but always, for better or for worse, inextricably linked.
Letters in the night.
